I am speechless at how we all rocked this HOT and HUMID QUAD run weekend. We are going to kick some Blue Ridge behind in September!!!!

I want to repeat my thanks for all the support for my tri on Sunday. Libby is a rock star, making sure I came in safe and sound on the bike. You all reminded me why I do all these events: friends, fun and finish (in that order)! And my new motto is definitely "friends don’t let friends do stupid things … alone!"

Tuesday, we meet at Kenan @ 6:15 for a LASHing (Ladders, Agility, Stairs & Hurdles)! If you come late, we will be in the stadium.

Thursday, Libby inspired a fun run for Thursday (barring mutiny). Let’s meet at Great Harvest on Elliot Road down from Whole Foods at 6:15 on Thursday and plan to do an Eastwood Lake loop! And, NO, I won’t explain why we are meeting there! Ha! (though you might want to bring a few bucks.)

This weekend we are due for a 9 miler. Sadly, we need to hit the road for this one. Route suggestions and Saturday/Sunday preferences welcome (I vote for Sunday at 7). The crepes truck is on vacation, so Merritt’s, WSM and Foster’s are options. We could meet at foster’s, do Bolin, the flat part of Battle Branch into Greenwood, over Raleigh/South Rd to the General admin bldg, then by st. thomas moore, up laurel hill and up south road to coumbia, then cameron to bike path around fleet feet to main and back down franklin to mlk and back to fosters. that’s got to be around nine with only one bad hill…

If you’re active outdoors, hydrate regularly (don’t wait until you’re thirsty), don’t take salt tablets (unless your doc says you should), take breaks to cool down every 30 minutes, and watch out for these heat-related complications:

  • Heat syncope: This triggers a woozy, dizzy feeling. People taking beta blockers (a type of blood pressure medication, are at higher risk. Get into a cool area, rest with your legs up, drink cool liquids, and call a doc if the world feels out of focus.
  • Heat cramps: These can come from working or playing in the heat. If your skin gets cool and damp, and your muscles tighten up, get into a cool area. Drink water or a sports drink with electrolytes, and put cold packs on yours wrists or neck.
  • Heat edema: This makes ankles and feet swell. Get into a cool area, elevate your legs, and drink cool fluids. If the swelling doesn’t ease, call your doctor.
  • Heat exhaustion: This is a warning that you’re headed toward heat stroke! You may be dizzy, weak, and nauseated. You may also have a rapid heartbeat and be sweaty and chilly at the same time. Get into a cool area, drink cool liquids, and get emergency medical care if you don’t feel better very soon.
  • Heat stroke: This causes rapid heartbeat, plummeting blood pressure, and problems breathing. Call 911 pronto! This is life-threatening. Get horizontal in a cool environment until help arrives.
